1. Purpose & scope

WY-ICARE has zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, sexual abuse and sexual harassment (SEAH) by any of its staff, volunteers, partners, contractors or other representatives. This policy applies to all persons acting on behalf of WY-ICARE in all programme locations, offices, digital spaces and travel.

It applies at all times — during and outside working hours — wherever misconduct is connected to WY-ICARE's work, reputation or relationships with communities.

2. Definitions & prohibited conduct

Sexual exploitation is any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power or trust for sexual purposes, including profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another.

Sexual abuse is the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence, humiliation or intimidation.

3. Obligations

All representatives must sign the WY-ICARE Code of Conduct and complete PSEAH induction and refresher training. Staff must report all concerns within 24 hours of becoming aware of them. Managers are additionally responsible for creating safe programme environments, conducting risk assessments and ensuring community feedback channels are accessible.

4. Community-facing commitments

WY-ICARE consults communities on programme conduct standards, displays behaviour commitments in local languages at programme sites, and maintains survivor-centred reporting channels that are confidential, accessible to women, children and persons with disabilities, and independent of programme staff where required.

5. Reporting & response

Reports can be made through the safeguarding channels on the Safeguarding page, by email to contact@wyicare.org (marked CONFIDENTIAL – SAFEGUARDING), by phone to +234 805 730 0333, or in person to any WY-ICARE office. All reports are triaged within 48 hours by the Safeguarding Focal Point.

Responses are survivor-centred: safety and wellbeing first, informed consent, confidentiality, referral to medical, psychosocial and legal support, and no retaliation. Substantiated violations result in disciplinary action up to dismissal, termination of partnerships, and referral to law enforcement where applicable.
